Start & End Point
KathmanduDo you wish to venture off along the Nepal trekking path that is far hidden away from the beaten trekking trails of Nepal? Probably, your answer is yes, then Himalayan Hope Treks propose you Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek, a 17 day adventure to the northern base camp of the Peak which is the third highest in the world.
Lying far from the most popular hiking mountain routes to Mount Everest or Annapurna, the Kanchenjunga base camp trek is rarely undertaken due to its remoteness and long duration.
However, this is an entire tea house journey that delves you deeper into the fantastic mountain world of Jannu, Chang, Taple Shikhar, Nepal Peak, Ramtang Peak, Tent Peak, Yalung Kang, Drohma Ri, and Langpo Glacier to name just a few.
Our Kanchenjunga base camp trek 17 days route will take you to eastern Nepal finally culminating at the mesmerizing north base camp of Kanchenjunga (5143 m) which is also affectionately called the Pang Pema Base Camp.
Exceptionally diverse, the trail will take you through the rich rhododendron forests, and rice terraces to the glacial alpine world. We will also meet various ethnic villages of Sherpas, Limbus, Rais, Gurungs, various Tibetan groups, and many other socio-cultural communities.
An earnest enthusiasm for adventure and trekking is all that the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek requires which is very gracious in the transitional times of autumn and spring.
Kanchenjunga remains elegant and shiniest during the enchanting transition of spring of March, April, and May and the autumn of September, October, and November.
Our Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek 17 days adventure is categorized as a profile III strenuous expedition in the far remote and lonely Kanchenjunga region.
However, our path mainly runs along the broad and beautifully designed hiking trails most of the time. Thin and steep slopes will occur during the travel to Ghunsa and upward. Our sleeping altitude will also reach 4500 m with 5143 m of the Kanchenjunga north base camp being the maximum.
Our Kanchenjunga base camp trek is perfect for new hikers if they are fit and regularly engage in sports or exercise. If you have experience with longer high-altitude treks over 3000 m, then that will be a plus.
Also, remember, this trek is quite remote so you should not compare the tea houses here with those available in Everest or Annapurna.
AMS which is often called altitude sickness is something that you have to consider in our Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek. Although our Kanchenjunga Base camp trek itinerary has been designed to permit your body to adjust to the thin altitude air, still, some of you may still experience sleep problems, eating interest loss, dizziness, and headaches.
The best simplest remedy in such a case is to move down but you can also choose to take Diamox ensuring you drink enough water as it is a diuretic medicine.
Please do not overlook the physical prep for the Kanchenjunga base camp trek and start training 3 to 4 months before the trip. You should aim for 3 sports actions per week such as football, volleyball, and basketball.
Also engage in moderate-intensity exercises such as swimming, cycling, walking, and running along with stair climbing. If you are in the gym, consider using exercise bikes and treadmills. For your leg muscles, hip thrusts, lungs, and squats will be best.
During our Kanchenjunga base camp trek 17 days journey, you will enjoy twin room setting of three-star hotels in Kathmandu with breakfast delivered each morning in your room.
Calm nights await you in the double room of mountain tea houses with all meals provided.
A Kathmandu-Bhadrapur flight and Taplejung-Kathmandu flight arrangements will be taken care of by Himalayan Hope Treks. For overland airport travels and onward journey to Taplejung from Bhadrapur, a private jeep will be supplied.
If you wish to see the south side of Kanchenjunga, then you can choose to trek to its southern base camp at 4610 m instead. The trek duration will be nearly the same as our Kanchenjunga base camp trek itinerary.
You may also consider a Kanchenjunga circuit trek that includes reaching its both base camps. For an added challenge, you can also choose to ascend the Drohma Ri from the North base camp.
Travel insurance with high elevation coverage with immediate heli evacuation up to 5200 m is a compulsion for our Kanchenjunga base camp trek. Additional medical and accidental coverage will be advantageous as well.
Himalayan Hope Treks will take care of procuring the RAP/Restricted Area Entry Permit and Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project Entry Permit (KCAP) needed for our Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek.
Yes, there will be internet or WiFi access in some tea houses at a small fee but do not expect it to be reliable and speedy. At higher remote parts, they may be absent as well. Mobile coverage with NTC will be the right one for this trek but may be limited to higher zones.
From Buddhist to Hindu, from Rai, Limbu, Sherpa to Chettris, there will be diverse encounters.
Yes, you may see red pandas, black bears, snow leopards, and rare birds of Kanchenjunga.
Yes, you can choose to go to its south base camp which can be accomplished within 7 to 9 days as well.
No, since no tea houses can be found, we will hike back to Lhonak instead after a few moments at the base camp.
