Start & End Point
KathmanduAre you a wonder seeker and storyteller? If so, then you must come to Himalayan Hope Treks’ Upper Mustang Trek which will take you to such part of the Nepalese Himalayas that resemble the huge maze of multicolored rocks, gorges, canyons, and caves.
Our Upper Mustang trek will in fact give you the incredible chance to stay and explore the nearly forgotten former Kingdom of Mustang, see the villages that evoke the past eras’ memories, and visit the time stood eternal monasteries.
You will be surrounded all the while by the ice giants of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna that line your Upper Mustang trek trails. But the highlight remains the excursion of Lo Manthang, the very old royal capital.
You will also go a little farther towards the Chhoser Cave and wonder at the 3 millennia-old Jhong Cave, a subject that has been long evoking the thinking of many researchers, historians, and scientists.
Until, 1992, the Upper Mustang trek remained strictly forbidden and even to this day, very few tourists step inside this massive unique land due to its restrictive nature which is one of the region’s greatest attractions.
The other attraction of this journey is that it allows you to be very close to the everyday lives of the unique Lopas, the primary inhabitants, and the locals of the area.
Their Buddhist tradition somehow differs from the Sherpas or Tamangs giving you glimpses of authentic Tibetan practices. Thus this trek will make you feel like you are more in Tibet than Nepal.
The Upper Mustang trek trail lacks difficulty but remains challenging because of the very dry and arid air and high elevations. But those who crave for adventure to the legendary locations of the world, the Upper Mustang trek will be the perfect one.
Unlike other regions in Nepal, the summer period between June, July, and August composes the perfect atmosphere for hiking in Upper Mustang. Shielded by the huge snow monsters, the regions scarcely face heavy weather.
Likewise, the beautifully blessed March, April, and May of spring and September, October, and November of Fall give the Upper Mustang an enchanting landscape and optimal climate.
From December, the very harsh climate like that of Tibet with the forceful speedy winds and cold reign in Upper Mustang till February which will best to avoid.
A profile II moderate challenge fills the Upper Mustang Trek 16 days journey with adventure. The entire journey will safely keep us below 4500 m with 6 hours of hiking along the frequently changing up and down sandy and rocky terrain.
The elevation increase and the high very drier zones with always changing weather generally make the Upper Mustang trek a bit tougher. However, our Upper Mustang trek itinerary will be very comfortable such that despite the altitude, even the new trekking adventurists will find the trip manageable.
Upper Mustang trek will be easier on your body throughout helping you to dodge AMS most of the time. With our perfectly and timely placed rest days, you will be allowed to adapt well to the high arid zone of Upper Mustang.
However, AMS cannot be predicted and simply can appear without any warning. But it will be very minor appearing as insomnia, fatigue, nausea, headaches, and vertigo that can be accurately managed with a high intake of water, sufficient sleep, rest, and Diamox Tablet.
If you wish to have a great Upper Mustang Trek, then do swimming, squats, push-ups, running, weight lifting, hiking, and cycling one month before you go for the trek.
All these actions will improve your cardio, lungs, and muscle health essential for long day treks.
Himalayan Hope Treks will accommodate you in a double occupancy room with an attached shower, toilet, WiFi, and hot water of a high-quality three-star hotel in Kathmandu and Pokhara. You will get your morning breakfast each day in your room.
As we move to villages, the locally run mountain lodges will offer you warm nights in their double-bedded rooms. Till Jomsom, the en suite shower and toilet will be available. Breakfasts, lunches, and dinners will be provided hot and fresh in the dining room of these lodges.
Private overland transfers will be provided for international and national flights. The flights occurring between Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Jomsom will also be overseen. However, the jeep or pony ride to Chhoser Cave cost will have to be paid on-site by you.
An an Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour, Upper Mustang jeep tour all around, and an Upper Mustang Trek and Drive trip are organized as well if you like to have quite a different experience. You can also think about integrating a Muktinath tour from Kagbeni if you wish.
Please also integrate getting travel insurance as an essential part of your preparation for the Upper Mustang trek. It is the remotely located highlands where accidents and health issues if occurred may need urgent assistance by helicopter.
So add the hiking coverage in your policy up to 5000 m altitude with the expenses covered for medical interventions and helicopter rescues.
Understand that Upper Mustang is a restricted remote area so only registered tour operators like Himalayan Hope Treks can organize treks and trips here. Plus, a licensed local guide is a must which we will provide you for the entire trek.
A special restricted area permit of US Dollars 500 each will be needed along with the TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) Card of US Dollars 20 each and the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) of US Dollars 30 each.
All the permit procedures and the linked fees will be seen by the Himalayan Hope Treks.
The massive Himalayan spectacle, Tibetan-styled settlements, the Lopas, the very old time-tested monasteries, and the Chhoser Cave are the main important characters of our Upper Mustang trek.
Except for the sacred deities and arts inside the monasteries, you can photograph other spots freely.
Get the Nepal Tele Communication Namaste Sim Card for communicating with your mobile.
Yes, most of the Mustang village lodges will give you WiFi access at a small fee but at Syangboche, Chele, and Ghami, the signal may get lost.
